As a family we took a trip to the Blue Bell Fun Run today (with Blue Bell Ice Cream afterward!) Chickie, my 5-year-old, did the 1-mile race, and I ran it with her. For the full race report with photos, check out my other blog!

Run #231: Blue Bell Fun Run 5K (PR!)
Today was the Blue Bell Fun Run 5K, and I got a PR!
After my 14-miler last weekend my IT band was not happy. I didn't run all week, and it was doing much better today. It was a little sore during my run, but never really cramped up. I'm glad that I did the 5K instead of the 10K though. It'll probably be back to normal in a few days.

Run #198 & Run #199 (Resolution Run 5K)
I ran one more time in Albuquerque with my dad, and again it was rough with my tight IT band...lots of walking. That was about 3.5 miles or so.
Today we had a Resolution Run 5K. My IT band is improving (lots of rolling!) but still not there. (I'm really mad at myself for letting my leg and glutes get so tight on vacation...hope it doesn't take too long to get it all worked out.) I had to walk a lot more than I wanted to but that meant I could push my speed that much more during the running segments, so my time was okay.
Happy New Year!!

Race Report (& Run #178)!
Well, it's Halloween...and race day! Hubby, the kids, and I all headed just a few miles from our house for our races. The kids were cold. And tired. (And in costume.)
My not-too-enthusiastic Batgirl & pirate before the races started:

First was the kids' 1K (0.62 mile) race. Zoodle (age 2 1/2) started slow but finished strong...

...while Chickie ran the whole way, keeping this superhero stance for the last quarter mile:

Then a friend of ours took the kids, and it was time for The Engineer and I to start our 5-miler. We won't have any photos of him until the professional ones are available, but he did awesome. He got 3rd place in his age group with a time of 37:03 (7:24/mile)!
Best of all, my IT band did great. I focused on keeping better form based on some stuff I read on the ChiRunning website; massaged the problem areas before the race; and taped it with KT Tape. I don't know exactly what did the trick, but it felt fantastic. I'm still keeping my appointment tomorrow because I want to keep this from coming back if possible. The only thing that worried me was that my right arch started hurting again for the last couple of miles, but it wasn't bad. I'll keep massaging it and working on my form (LIFTING my feet instead of pushing off), and I'll ask about it in my appointment tomorrow.
Here I am feeling good and looking weird (with my Vibrams and my crazy KT Tape!)

I placed really low in the rankings; I'm not fast! But I got a PR (personal record) for five-mile time! I was way faster than I thought I'd be, and I was thrilled with my time. Here are my stats:
Time: 50:34 (10:07/mile)
Mile 1: 11:29
Mile 2 & 3: Average 10:37
Mile 4: 9:05
Mile 5: 8:46
Mile 5 was my fastest timed mile ever! That floored me! I love running negative splits (starting slow and speeding up) but I bet I could improve my overall time if my my splits were a little less drastically different.
I got a burst of adrenaline at the end and sprinted to the finish. What a great race!

Run #75: My first 10K!!!!!!!!!
WOOOO HOOOOO!! I did it! I ran every step of my first 10K! My time was 1:07:45, which is an average of 10:55 per mile.
Before I get into the details, here was my funniest moment of the race: There was a good-natured heckler at the side of the road almost 3 miles into the race. (He was yelling, "Only 5 miles left to go!") I yelled back, "You get out here and run with us! You can talk big...!" He laughed and then held up his camera, which by that time was just taking a picture of my back.
All right, here are the details. First, my approximate mile times:
Mile 1: 12:28
Mile 2: 11:03
Mile 3 & 4: Average 11:02*
Mile 5: 9:43
Mile 6: 10:27**
Final 0.2 miles: 2:00**
*Missed Mile 3 marker; Miles 3 & 4 together were 22:04.
**My final 1.2 miles were 12:27 total, so I'm estimating my Mile 6 time and my final 0.2 mile time.
This was so awesome!!! I ran it with my friend David. He's not a runner, and he kept up with me (even went ahead at the end--go, David!) It was really fun to run with someone.
At the beginning we started ULTRA-slow. Nearly everyone was passing us. But at the mile marker, people started running out of steam and walking, so we got the fun of passing people!
We were able to speed up a bit for the next few miles, and at the 4 mile marker, I was feeling good, so I decided to push my pace. (I was setting the pace for me and David.) Obviously I ran out of steam somewhat after Mile 5, but it was still a good pace at the end--a lot faster than I have been going in my training. That last mile and a half was hard--I was tired!! But it felt WONDERFUL to be able to push my pace faster for the last 1/3 of the race, since I'd conserved my energy.
Originally, my goal was to do this race in under 11 minutes a mile. My training times were slower than that, though, and I realized I just needed to have the goal of running the whole way. I didn't want to stress myself out by trying to hit a particular pace. I'm so glad--if I'd continued to have that "11 minute a mile" goal, I would have been a little freaked out to see how slow my first mile was! But whaddya know--I was able to reach my (discarded) goal of 11 minutes a mile (actually, 10:55) and, more importantly, reach my primary goal of running every step.
I felt like this was such a SWEET reward, for getting up and going outside to run, by myself, 3 or 4 times a week, for the last 5 1/2 months. To come together with 20,000 (!!) other runners, all different ages and fitness levels, and enjoy the thrill of the race--and to meet my goals--was just awesome.

Run #56: First official 5K!
This was my first official 5K! My pace was just a smidge slower than last time I ran in my neighborhood. I think with the excitement I got off on my breathing, and I did a little bit of walking near the end because of some side cramps and just being winded. But it went great, and I can't wait to beat this time next time I do a race!
Out of 181 women, I was #91, which puts me precisely in the middle of the pack. I'm pretty happy with that, with under 4 1/2 months of running under my belt
Honestly, I was hoping to have my personal best time/pace, but it was still a really great experience.
31:36, 10:11 per mile
